Hey, everyone!
This is my NWN interpretation of Edwin Odesseiron, the powerful Mage companion you could get in Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2. He was a Conjurer, and one of the Red Wizards of Thay. His hunger for power was so intense that he ended up turning himself into a woman (Edwina). The idea behind this build was that he would do anything for power, so he tries to study some Natural magic just so he can increase his arcane prowess. He’s also Evil, and would do anything to win a fight, which means that trap tactics are definitely not something he’d be afraid to use if it gave him an edge. He’s a very powerful caster build with improved summons, an Animal Companion that can help him gain the first few levels, and then Craft Wand + his arcane spells to make him a force to be reckoned with. The Druid level gives him Improved Summons (at least on WoG, where I’m playing him), and the focus in Conjuration is more for flavor than because it’s any good. Although he was Lawful Evil in the game, he needs to be Neutral Evil in this interpretation. If that bothers you, you can swap Druid for Cleric and choose the Animal domain. You lose a few skill points and the Animal Companion to help you early on, but the improved summons will still apply. Then he doesn’t need to be Neutral anymore, only Evil for Assassin.
This is a typical caster build that can use Evard’s Black Tentacles very effectively in combat. The biggest problem with Conjuration focus for Arcane Casters is that the highest level spell that it applies to is Evard’s, which is a level 4 spell. Since DCs take spell level into account, this means that your highest DC in a Conjuration spell will still be only 1 point higher than your own level 9 spells for any other schools, and 5 points lower than if you had gone with Necromancy focus and fired off a Wail of the Banshee. Also, immunities and DR can be a nuisance when you’re casting Evard’s Black tentacles all the time. The only good thing is that it’s very difficult for mages and other fragile types to survive even 1 round inside the AoE of Empowered Evard’s. However, because you’re Human, that also applies to you, so be very mindful where you cast it, and stay away from the AoE! If only Edwin were a Gnome, right?
Anyway, here he is! Ladies and Gentlement, Edwin Odesseiron!
