I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to build a melee Double Axe user. Here is one attempt utilizing fighter, weapon master and rogue.
Note that all my builds are made with the Swordflight environment in mind. In Swordflight, it’s possible to find a leather armor with Improved Evasion and Hide in Plain Sight. It’s restricted to assassins but that’s what UMD is for after all. This build aims to use that armor.
There is a lot of freedom with skill points. I have a pretty tight schedule set up until level 33 but you can adjust as you wish based on which skills you want to use. In Swordflight, craft armor and craft weapon are both very useful and I tend to add as much as I need to get critical weapon/armor upgrades.
In early levels, stealth can be used to quietly survey battlefields before engaging, perhaps to sneak up to a magic user and target him first, before he can buff up. With a starting dex of 15, Cat’s Grace and perhaps some dex-boosting item, armors with lower penalties to stealth abilities can be used to enable more successful sneaking. With a higher starting dex, utilizing ranged weapons, especially throwing weapons that are automatically mighty, becomes quite attractive as well as a precursor to melee combat.
Weapon master enables a comfortable dual-wielding AB of 46, great for landing knockdowns and critical hits, etc. In a pinch, Expertise can be turned on, especially at higher levels, for extra protection when needed.
Against an enemy melee fighter, crippling strike sneak attacks will devastate the opponent’s main stat, weakening his AB and damage, effectively making us harder to hit.
