Hi Orion! I am not sure if you still play NWN but I have a question for you.

Here is the modified Exalted Sorceress build I am currently using:

I am playing in Swordflight where I can cast with Expertise on. I took the Paladin level early because it will enable several things in the mod. I’m currently at level 5. Now, I had an idea to edit the build as follows:

      BUILD B) Sorcerer(38), Paladin(1), Monk(1), Gnome

      STR: 8
      DEX: 8
      CON: 18 (21)
      WIS: 10
      INT: 14
      CHA: 16 (32)

Gnome: (Defensive Training vs. Giants, Hardiness vs. Enchantments, Low-light Vision, Offensive Training vs. Goblinoids, Offensive Training vs. Reptilians, Skill Affinity: Concentration, Skill Affinity: Listen, Small Stature, Spell Focus: Illusion)
      01: Sorcerer(1): Expertise
      02: Sorcerer(2)
      03: Sorcerer(3): Improved Expertise
      04: Paladin(1): CHA+1, (CHA=17)
      05: Sorcerer(4)
      06: Sorcerer(5): Extend Spell
      07: Sorcerer(6)
      08: Sorcerer(7): CHA+1, (CHA=18)

      40: Concentration(2), Spellcraft(2),

I’ll quickly outline the differences in the builds and also how they differ from the original Exalted Sorceress build:

      1. Build A has +6 charisma compared to Exalted Sorceress. It has no Discipline because Discipline seems meaningless on a weak gnome and as a sorceress she can avoid melee combat when necessary. She has +3DC on all spells instead of a focus in necromancy only (I don’t like the idea of playing a necromancer!) Because she’s not human, she has one less feat (spell focus necromancy) I gave her Craft Wand because it will help her to cast spells she no longer knows as a sorceress (craft wand of a spell then swap it out for a different on during a level-up). I cut improved combat casting because I intend to use damage shields heavily with her and to use Shapechange: Iron Golem. Simply put, I would rather have +1/+2 charisma instead of improved combat casting.

      2. Now for Build B in comparison to Build A: I really want to run around as an iron golem and I’m playing a gnome so it really seems like it would be a good idea to add Epic Damage Reduction. I figured I could cut the auto-still feats and Epic Mage Armor to add Epic Damage Reduction instead. The biggest loss here is 4 charisma (-2 spell DC and -2 saving throws, etc) compared to Build A. Another consideration is that my strength in both builds is lower than the original exalted sorceress so I might be better off not trying to wear heavy armor.

So here is where I would like your advice:

      1) Do you think either or both builds are good/decent enough to play? Does either build have any glaring problem I have overlooked?

      2) Is Build B OK in place of Build A? Is it a bad idea to lose the auto still feats? Is it a bad idea to go for Epic Damage Reduction?

I know a lot of people go for palemaster 10 for damage shield builds but I want to use shapechange instead for roleplaying reasons (I don’t want to play as an undead. Yuck!) and because I want the full casting power of a (almost) pure sorceress build.

Thanks in advance for any advice you or anyone else reading this may provide.

      Best,

        39: Listen(30), Tumble(40),
        40: Concentration(2), Spellcraft(2),

It’s the second build (the one with epic damage reduction). I did -1str -2 wis to get +1cha and Epic Mage Armor. I also cut Craft Wand. The cost for crafting wands is simply beyond what I’m willing to pay. I added Spell Focus: Evocation instead.

My ninth level spells will be Mord’s, Time Stop and Shapechange.

I got frustrated at myself for making everything so complicated, so I decided to revert the build to something more tried and true:

          Sorcerer(38), Paladin(1), Monk(1), Human

          STR: 10
          DEX: 8

          INT: 14
          CHA: 18 (34)

          Human: (Quick to Master)
          01: Sorcerer(1): Expertise, Improved Expertise
          02: Sorcerer(2)
          03: Sorcerer(3): Extend Spell
          04: Paladin(1): CHA+1, (CHA=19)

Any thoughts? I really wish I could end with 2 more charisma. I wouldn’t mind cutting epic skill focus: discipline but I don’t know what else to cut in order to get two Great Charisma feats.

Apologies for the delay in answering. It has been a while but it will be good to remind myself about building!

I think +2 Cha could be fun. It means +1 DC all spells, +1 saves, one extra lvl 3 and one extra lvl 7 spell per day. with max Cha, 34(46) vs 36 (48) ->

One would have to give up Epic Skill Focus: Discipline and Epic Spell Focus: Necromancy.

The Gnome builds are really interesting for the extra Con and AC, base 370hp Sorc with EDR III, sky high saves with evasion means its a very solid sorcerer

Orion, thanks for your feedback! I sometimes have a tendency to mess builds up because I edit them too much, even though I don’t really have enough experience playing that particular type of build. I noticed that, as a sorcerer, it would be really nice to not have to worry about taking off armor to cast spells, so I decided that the Autostill feats were more valuable than the EDR feats. So I changed my character from gnome to human and stopped trying to raise Con, etc.

Re: +2 charisma vs. ESF: Discipline and ESF: Necromancy, I figured that spell DCs will matter the most for Necromancy spells (after all, if I want my DCs to be competitive for other types of spells, I should have the Focus feats for those spell schools), so I would rather have an extra +1 DC for necromancy spells instead of +1 DC for all other types of spells.

My original build idea was centered around the Shapeshift spell but I’m defaulting back to Mord’s, Time Stop and Wail of the Banshee as 9th level spells.

I often refer to your list of recommended spells: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/nwnecbguild/sorcerer-spell-list-what-is-your-ideal-spell-list–t2355513.html and I did read through https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/nwnecbguild/wizard-and-sorcerer-spellcasting-strategies-t2355313.html. However, I don’t use tapatalk anymore so I won’t be commenting directly on those threads. I wanted to go heavy on damage shields along with Shapeshift but changed my mind and decided to go the necromancy focus route after all.

It’s reassuring that you liked my EDR idea, even though I’ve decided I (probably?) won’t do it this time around 😀 Also, as nice as gnome seems on paper, playing through a single-player campaign with an XP penalty is a bit of a slog.

So many builds to play through, so many builds I want to experience at level 40, but leveling takes so long haha
