Commentary:
There’s something special about a pure spell caster – fabulous spell penetration, lots of bonus feats.
And a decent wizard also wielding a flaming, keen greatsword is a sight to behold.
I made some adjustments to WebShaman’s build Melee Mage (Wizard 40) written in 2008:
- put in Light, Medium and Heavy Armor Proficiency
- put in Automatic Still Spell III for full spell casting in Heavy Armor
- Expertise, Blind Fight, Epic Weapon Focus and Epic Prowess
- +2 Str +2 Con
I removed 4 Int, 2 Dex and Power Attack/Cleave/Great Cleave (useful but I think the extra 8-13 AC / 3 AB and Auto-still III is more helpful). Extend Spell and Craft Wand can be swapped as needed.
As Web wrote previously, hitting non-difficult enemies with the melee weapon helps saves spells, which are then largely used for boss encounters. It still reaches 32 Int, which when capped (with maximum +12 bonus) provides 3 bonus level 9 spells / day. Enemy AC can be lowered with spells such as Grease/Darkness/Stinking Cloud/Bigby’s 6 +7. It feels very easy to play.
A specialist school is recommended for +1 spell/level/day. I’d suggest either Necromancy (if you want to use Enchantment spells, such as Hold Monster, Mass Haste or Dominate Monster) or Illusion (if you want True Strike, Find Traps, True Sight and Premonition).
